Dr. Wiktor Hebda, Assistant Professor at the Department of National Security, completed a research internship at the Department of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia on January 26 – February 9, 2023. The internship was part of an ID.UJ grant for the research/development work conducted with foreign entities.

The purpose of the internship was to conduct the research entitled: EastMed Project in the Context of Gas Supplies to Poland, the planned result of which are to be published in a high-impact journal. EastMed is a gas infrastructure project enabling the transmission of gas from newly discovered deposits in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea (exclusive economic zones of Cyprus and Israel) to European countries. During his stay in Cyprus, Dr. Hebda assessed the possibility of distributing the fuel through the North-South Gas Corridor (Poland-Croatia) and thus supplying Poland from the south (an alternative to the Baltic Pipe and the LNG terminal in Swinoujscie).

The research was carried out in cooperation with Dr. Pavlos Ioanis Koktsidis, the head of the international project entitled: EastMed Challenges and Dynamics (University of Cyprus in Nicosia, University of Piraeus, Ca' Foscari University of Venice, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer Sheva), engaged with the political and economic aspects of EastMed, as well as energy security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
