The Ukrainian and Chinese proposals for a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine announced formally between November 2022 and March 2023 differ in terms of motivations and fundamental goals. For Kiev, the most important condition is the restoration of full territorial integrity, the effective recognition and application of the primacy of the UN principles, and holding accountable and punishing the Russian Federation for unleashing the devastating and bloody war. In its efforts, China has aimed at strengthening further its position in the relations with the Western countries and using the Ukrainian crisis in the rivalry with the USA. Beijing’s ultimate goal is a Sinocentric redefinition of the international order and China’s global leadership.
