At the end of September 2020, heavy fights broke out in Nagorno-Karabakh between the armed forces of Armenia and Azerbaijan, thus starting a new stage in the conflict over that disputed region. The confrontation in the borderlands of the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (Artsakh) was initiated by the Azerbaijani government, possessing a significant military advantage. The position of the Republic of Turkey, which openly supported Azerbaijan and demanded that Armenia immediately end its occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh, also had a fundamental impact on the escalation of the struggle. The aggressive rhetoric of the Turks is also determined by the reserved attitude of the Russian Federation, which so far has employed only diplomatic means in an attempt to resolve the ongoing dispute.
