J. Niemiec - Directorate of Religious Affairs as a Turkish foreign policy tool in Europe

25.04.2020
Contrary to popular belief, the Republic of Turkey has never adopted the European model of secularism. An analysis of Turkish legislation shows that laicism in Turkey is conceived as strict state control over religion. The government maintains absolute supervision over the religiosity of citizens thanks to the Directorate for Religious Affairs (Diyanet), established in 1924. In the early 1970s, the institution began its international operations, offering religious support to Turkish diaspora in Western Europe. Since the Justice and Development Party took power in Turkey, Diyanet has become one of the main tools of Turkish public diplomacy which promotes the political vision of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan around the world.

M. Rekowski - 5G in the year of COVID-19: What impact the pandemic will have on the political debate about the building of 5G in Europe?

20.04.2020
Recent media reports have shown a growing number of attacks on 5G base stations across Europe. The attacks are being linked to a popular conspiracy theory according to which the current coronavirus pandemic is caused by the rollout and usage of 5G infrastructure. However, the global debate on 5G gained currency already in 2018 and has been centered on the cybersecurity concerns related to the usage of 5G equipment produced by Chinese vendors. In 2019 these concerns dominated the 5G conversation in the European Union. As companies and governments increasingly move online to keep running, the COVID-19 pandemic might lead to an accelerated 5G deployment in Europe.

P. Frankowski - Changes in the space services market

09.04.2020
This short analytical piece sheds light on recent development in the space industry regarding the growing interest of private actors as well as high susceptibility to market demands and challenges. The ongoing pandemics increases huge demands on the space industry and even seemingly credible service providers have to deal with unexpected problems and had to shut down launching pads, even facing bankruptcy on short notice. Finally, as every crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic provides not only risks but also chances for any industry and political activities. Examples could be found in the US, with a new executive order from the White House on space exploration as well as in China, whose companies would be the first to benefit from a reshuffling in the space market.
