The migration crisis in the European Union: mitigating long-term effects

17.11.2019
The migration crisis which began in 2014 and reached its climax in 2015-2016 was eased in 2018 through a combination of preventive, deterrent and repressive measures taken individually by the EU’s member states as well as at the level of the European Union’s institutions and agencies. An alternative, and to some extent an experimental initiative, has been proposed by the Committee of the Regions in cooperation with European and Libyan regions and municipalities. Launched in 2016, the so-called Nicosia Initiative aims at providing a platform for the exchange of good practices between the local authorities from both sides of the Mediterranean and beyond.
