The Ukrainian and Chinese proposals for a peaceful solution to the conflict in Ukraine announced formally between November 2022 and March 2023 differ in terms of motivations and fundamental goals. For Kiev, the most important condition is the restoration of full territorial integrity, the effective recognition and application of the primacy of the UN principles, and holding accountable and punishing the Russian Federation for unleashing the devastating and bloody war. In its efforts, China has aimed at strengthening further its position in the relations with the Western countries and using the Ukrainian crisis in the rivalry with the USA. Beijing’s ultimate goal is a Sinocentric redefinition of the international order and China’s global leadership.

In the last three decades, it has become obvious that space systems belonging to the militaries and intelligence agencies play an increasingly prominent role in all aspects of modern warfare. From communications to positioning to surveillance missions, satellite-derived services significantly increase the effectiveness of every kind of military operation. In this analysis we will first describe the European space systems and their capabilities suitable for military purposes. Next, we will try to assess the strategic relevance of these systems, bearing in mind the European security environment. And finally, we will provide our assessment of the future of the European space architecture against the backdrop of recent and prospective changes in space security.

Contrary to popular belief, the effectiveness and usefulness of the state's intelligence apparatus is not determined solely by efficiency and dedication of individual intelligence services, called "special services" in Poland. A properly shaped system for managing the entire intelligence apparatus, planning and coordinating its efforts, and organizing the flow of acquired information in a way that guarantees their effective use in the process of managing state security is of key importance. Their work may be completely wasted without a properly formed system of oversight and coordination of intelligence services on the strategic level.

Russia’s aggression against Ukraine of 24th February 2022 and the ensuing full-scale war has had significant impact on many levels, starting from the international order, through the regional economy, to individual lives of people in and outside of Ukraine. It holds a particular importance in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the so-called “frontline states” – Poland, the Baltic states, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania which share not only the bordering with the countries in the state of war, but also a particular geopolitical position (on the Eastern flank of NATO and the European Union), as well as a difficult history of the relations with Russia.

The armed conflict in Ukraine, which began with the invasion of the Russian Federation on the 24 February 2022, caused the affluence of foreign volunteers fighting on Ukraine’s side. This group was joined also by Polish citizens. This analysis elaborates on the current state of law and on permission rules concerning the legal military service of a Polish citizen in foreign armed forces or a foreign military organization.
