At the invitation of the Ahmed bin Mohammed Military Academy in Qatar, Prof. Artur Gruszczak, head of the Department of National Security (KBN) at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations of the Jagiellonian University, and Dr. Agata Mazurkiewicz, an Assistant Professor at KBN, took part in the international symposium of military academies ISOMA 2023. The symposium took place on October 2-3, 2023 in the teaching and conference facilities of the Ahmed bin Mohammed Military Academy located on the outskirts of the capital city of Qatar, Doha.

Professor Gruszczak presented a paper on "Poland as a Frontline State: The Impact of the War in Ukraine on Military-Academic Education" as part of the panel "The Impact of International Crises and Conflicts on Military-Academic Education". Additionally, he served as a moderator in the panel "Cultural Awareness and Diversity in Military Academies". Doctor Mazurkiewicz gave a presentation on "Civil-Military Cooperation: The Role of Education in Civil-Military (Cultural) Awareness".

The symposium, organized under the aegis of the International Association of Military Academies (IAMA), was attended by representatives of military academies and civilian universities from 29 countries from five continents. During the two-day meeting, 50 papers were presented on such topics as security education, military studies, strategic studies and cultural aspects of security. The symposium gave an excellent opportunity to exchange views, experiences and practical solutions regarding security education, in the military and civilian dimensions, in the rapidly changing security environment in the local, regional and global dimensions. Interactions between representatives of military academies and civilian universities offering security education programs resulted in many observations and takeaways regarding the scope, methods, techniques and effects of education in connection with in-depth research on contemporary security from both a sectoral and an interdisciplinary perspective, the latter aspiring to apply a comprehensive approach to safety and security. The ISOMA 2023 symposium emphasized the growing role of civil-military cooperation in the academic and scientific fields, creating synergy between education at military universities and programs implemented at universities, mainly connected to scientific research. The interconnectivity of the levels of academic education, vocational training at military universities and multidisciplinary scientific research determines a new format of security education worldwide.

The Jagiellonian University, represented by members of faculty of the Department of National Security at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations, has been participating in ISOMA symposia since 2017 as one of the few non-military universities. ISOMA provides the opportunity to present security education programs conducted at the Jagiellonian University, in particular at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations. It is also convenient for emphasizing the specificity of education and research at the Jagiellonian University, which is constantly developing, modernizing and including representatives of the social environment in teaching and research activities, particularly security specialists with impressive professional experience and practical knowledge.
