Qatar: The Power in the Making

The use of the term “power” with regard to a desert country, whose territorry is slightly larger than two-thirds of the Lesser Poland voivodeship and which has had an anachronistic form of political regime, seems really unreasonable or at least inadequate. Taking a closer look at this contemporary incarnation of the ancient polis, Qatar can be seen as an actor which has been growing in strength when it comes to its place in the international arena. Its ambitious plans go far beyond simple survival. Big natural limitations, which might seem to be the biggest obstacle in the path of building its strength, actually have become important advantages of Qatar’s Al Thani dynasty on its way to modernization of the country and acquirement of the status of a pocket-size power.
