M. Kolaszyński - Thirty years of the Polish civil special services

On the 6th of April 1990, the Sejm adopted the so-called police acts. According to the new law, the Citizen's Militia was substituted with the Police. The State Protection Office replaced the disbanded Security Service. The role of the Minister of the Interior also changed. Police acts passed 30 years ago were an essential step in adapting the security apparatus to the needs of a democratic rule of law.

On the 6th of April 1990, the Sejm adopted the so-called police acts. According to the new law, the Citizen's Militia was substituted with the Police. The State Protection Office replaced the disbanded Security Service. The role of the Minister of the Interior also changed. Police acts passed 30 years ago were an essential step in adapting the security apparatus to the needs of a democratic rule of law. The organization and functioning of the intelligence services have changed radically. Contemporary laws on the Polish special services are a continuation of legal solutions developed thirty years ago. This commentary depicts from today's perspective the most significant changes introduced 30 years ago.
