We are proud and honoured to have Professor Beatrice Heuser as our keynote speaker.

Professor Beatrice Heuser is an internationally renowned historian, scholar of war studies and outstanding strategic studies expert. She is Professor of International Relations at the School of Social and Political Science, University of Glasgow. She taught at the Department of War Studies of King’s College London and at the University of Reading, and held visiting professorships at many universities.  She spent a year as a consultant at NATO Headquarters. She has worked as Director of Studies of the German Bundeswehr’s military history research office.  She has been affiliated to academic advisory boards of several research institutes, including the French Institute of International Affairs (IFRI), the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Chatham House (RIIA), the German Institute for Contemporary History, and the French government’s strategic studies think tank IRSEM. A prolific author, she has published many books, including War: A Genealogy of Western Ideas and Practices (Oxford University Press 2022); Strategy Before Clausewitz: Linking Warfare and Statecraft, 1400-1830 (Routledge 2017); The Evolution of Strategy: Thinking War from Antiquity to the Present (Cambridge University Press 2010); The Strategy Makers: Thoughts on War and Society from Machiavelli to Clausewitz (Praeger 2010);  Reading Clausewitz (Pimlico 2002).

She has co-chaired the Talking Strategy podcast series, exploring the strategists and ideas that have shaped today’s understanding of defence and security.
